We are seeking a skilled and experienced Financial Controller to join our Finance Team in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The successful candidate will play a critical role in managing the firm’s financial operations, ensuring accuracy in accounting and financial reporting, and contributing to our overall financial strategy.

We pride ourselves on our commitment to excellence, and our dedication to upholding the highest standards of integrity and professionalism.

Key Responsibilities:

⮚ Mentor and lead the accounting and office administration team, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and professional development

⮚ Oversee the operations of the accounting department, ensuring the accurate and timely processing of financial transactions and the preparation of financial statements and reports

⮚ Develop and maintain internal controls to safeguard the firm’s cash flow, assets and ensure compliance with the Nova Scotia Barrister’s Society and other regulations

⮚ Coordinate and prepare annual budgets and financial forecasts, working closely with management

⮚ Monitor and analyze monthly financial results, providing insights and recommendations to improve financial performance

⮚ Manage cash flow and forecasting, ensuring sufficient funds are available to meet

ongoing operational and capital investment requirements

⮚ Lead the preparation of year-end financial statements and coordinate with external auditors for the annual Nova Scotia Barrister’s Society audit

⮚ Provide strategic financial input and leadership on decision-making issues affecting the firm

⮚ Ensure compliance with provincial and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings

Education & Qualifications:

⮚ Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. A Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation is highly desirable

⮚ A minimum of 5 years of experience in a financial leadership role, preferably in a law firm or professional services environment

⮚ Strong understanding of GAAP, financial reporting, and budgeting

⮚ Proficiency in accounting software and systems

⮚ Exceptional analytical, organizational, and leadership skills

⮚ Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities, with a proven ability to build

relationships at all levels of the organization

⮚ Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and to lead with integrity and professionalism

⮚ Previous training and/or experience in process improvement is an asset.
