Legal Counsel

The job exists to make sure Shakepay is in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations for its business.

Internally: We offer support to each team with their legal questions and requests. Whether it is compliance, privacy, AML, product, contract, the goal is to provide a quick and clear response resulting in an outcome that is not only legally accurate, but also taking into account the values that make up Shakepay.

Externally: Protect Shakepay and its customers' interests. Work with external vendors and regulators to reach positive business outcomes on legal arrangements.

You will

Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to proactively identify and address potential legal issues and risks.

Offer strategic legal guidance on all areas of the business including commercial, securities, consumer protection, IP, employment, privacy, marketing, and regulatory.

Contribute to the development and launch of innovative products and services by providing legal support

Offer guidance in regulatory compliance, staying on top of changes in laws and regulations related to financial services

Prepare, draft, review and negotiate commercial contracts and provide legal advice regarding the associated risks

Liaise with external law firms when necessary to ensure comprehensive legal support and expertise

Efficiently manage dispute resolution, law enforcement inquiries, and other legal proceedings

Draft terms and conditions, policies and disclosures ensuring legal compliance and transparency

Develop and implement streamlined processes to enhance the efficiency of legal workflows

Must have

Bachelor of law degree and/or Juris Doctorate with provincial bar membership

Minimum of 4 years of experience working in a law firm and/or as in-house counsel in Canada

Proficient in legal terminology and operations

Solid understanding of corporate law and commercial law

Critical thinking and multitasking abilities

Contract negotiation and drafting skills

Ability to effectively manage competing priorities and meet tight deadlines

Strong interpersonal and organizational skills

Comfortable thriving in a fast-paced culture, with a pragmatic, solution-driven approach

Creative mindset and the capability to propose alternative solutions to intricate challenges

Excellent oral and written communication skills in English

Nice to have

Experience in the financial and/or technology industry

Interest in crypto and new technologies

Crisis management experience

Excellent and oral written communication skills in French
