General Responsibilities

All Roles

As a member of the SSU Executive Team, you will be an advocate on behalf of the entire Sheridan Community across all campuses, demographics, and programs. Your role is to be a top student leader, representing the interests of the students through informed feedback and observation. As the Vice-President (VP) of a specific area, you will be working under the SSU President and Senior Vice-President to create opportunities, initiatives, and further the organizational goals and priorities related to your specific position. These initiatives and opportunities will be cross-campus and will require collaboration and coordination with the other VPs to ensure you are serving the entire Sheridan community.

You will be focusing on supporting students academically through Academic Appeals, directing students to available services such as tutoring or Academic Advisors, being well-informed of these resources, and finding new resources to bring to Sheridan students. You will represent students by being informed about concerns, challenges, and issues that students face to be successful academically.

Advocacy

Your primary role will be to represent the marginalized communities within Sheridan and provide insight into accessibility challenges that students may be facing. This includes, but is not limited to, the 2SLGBTQIA+, Black, Indigenous, and equity-seeking communities. Your advocacy work will extend beyond Sheridan to include college, municipal, and governmental stakeholders. You will also influence and assist in writing our organizational Advocacy Policies.

Community

This role will focus not only on the Sheridan community, but the surrounding community as well. Bringing in external partners to offers perks, opportunities, and services to students, and facilitating opportunities for Sheridan to engage with the local community in a variety of ways. You will also be working towards building a positive campus community and enhancing the identity of individual campuses.

Engagement

Focusing on internal, SSU opportunities for staff, and how we work alongside the college itself, you will be working on planning events, parties, and welcome opportunities for all staff and students. This will include, but is not limited to, New Student Orientation, Staff Holiday Parties, Staff Retreats and Team Building Activities, and helping build a positive partnership with the college through a variety of student-focused events.

International

You will represent all international students at Sheridan and help support and further their interests as students and newcomers to Canada. This will not focus on one specific demographic, but all international students from the various countries that they call home. Your work will include advocating for the betterment of the international community, and bringing cultural events to celebrate and educate on the wide variety of cultures present at Sheridan.

Qualifications

A successful candidate will have:

Excellent verbal, and written communication skills;

Confidence in public speaking to groups of students and while hosting events;

An ability to conduct themselves in a professional manner;

A flexible schedule to be able to work a variety of hours during regular business hours (between 8am and 6pm);

A positive and respectful attitude;

A strong, creative mind to create new and innovative campus initiatives;

Familiarity and aptitude with popular social media platforms;

A self-motivated work-ethic with the ability to work independently and in a team environment; and

The ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with honesty and integrity

Specific Duties Include

All Roles

Attend staff meetings, planning committees, and collaborate with the college, as required;

Create monthly reports and recaps of projects and initiatives to be presented to the SSU Board of Directors;

Create initiatives to support the SSU organizational goals and priorities, while raising awareness and providing support for services and issues that students encounter;

Assist other Vice-Presidents with their initiatives and projects to ensure all campuses are being considered and represented equitably;

Represent your respective campus, as needed, while recognizing the President as the primary spokesperson of Sheridan Student Union Inc.;

Collect feedback and analyze student trends to provide guidance for the organization’s goals and priorities;

Hold the responsibility of being a signing officer for the corporation, as needed;

Help develop, review and maintain a yearly budget for the Executive Team;

Attend retreats, events, and conferences as authorized by the President; and

Other duties as assigned by the President or Senior Vice President

Support students academically through guidance and advocacy for a safe, inclusive, accessible, and equitable student experience;

Help support and facilitate academic appeals with students from all campuses;

Support students academically through awareness of the college’s offered services;

Seek new partners and opportunities that the Sheridan Student Union may offer as support;

Work with college and internal partners to ensure we meet accessibility standards through our services and facilities;

Create initiatives to support students through the entire academic journey, including program applications, course selection, graduation, and career development; and

Discover new ways to support students academically through feedback and observation of current academic needs

Advocacy

Advocate for the fair treatment of all Sheridan students academically, personally, and professionally;

Coordinate student outreach to support students and guide them to the most appropriate service for the issues they may be facing;

Determine gaps in support and resources for students from all communities from an SSU and college perspective;

Create community-building initiatives to connect those seeking others within a particular community;

Connect with external organizations to advocate on behalf of specific communities, or the entire student body;

Reach out to Sheridan’s diverse communities to receive feedback, direction, and guidance on how to set organizational advocacy goals; and

Work with the President to maintain, update, and expand the SSU Advocacy Policies to reflect our goals and priorities for all Sheridan Students

Community

Communicate with students to develop an ideal student life on campus through events, services, facilities, and community;

Create initiatives to expand campus identity and a sense of community within Sheridan;

Develop wellness strategies and initiatives to support Sheridan students in collaboration with the college, or independently;

Build awareness to the activities, services, and facilities available to students on campus, both within the college and the SSU;

Advocate for the improvement and development of new facilities, services and opportunities for students on campus;

Pursue external partnerships that will benefit the Sheridan community and improve the services and products that the Student Union offers; and

Connect students to others within the Sheridan community to help facilitate an inclusive, interconnected environment of support and unity;

Engagement

Work with internal and college staff, and external partners to create opportunities for growth, both personally and professionally, for students and staff;

Liaise with college staff on execution of special college events such as Open House and New Student Orientation;

Seek new opportunities with college partners for collaboration and support on initiatives and projects;

Help coordinate recognition for internal staff through awards and celebrations;

Sit on the Health and Safety committee to ensure our facilities are complying with health and safety guidelines and regulations;

Assist in coordinating supplemental training for part-time staff; and

Organize team building activities to help strengthen collaboration within the SSU

International

Ensure an informed perspective both personally and as an organization to represent all international students at Sheridan;

Connect with the international student communities throughout Sheridan to understand their specific needs and concerns;

Give input on strategic planning and goal setting from an international lens to ensure equitable consideration for all students;

Coordinate cultural events throughout the year to recognize cultural holidays, festivals, and celebration;

Develop educational initiatives to educate and inform others of the various cultures and backgrounds of Sheridan students;

Conduct outreach to external community organizations to further inform our advocacy for international students and create partnerships to support our communities; and

Alongside the President, represent the diverse international students on behalf of the SSU to external organizations, and groups
